Volunteer’s experience
If a regular client has not been seen for a short while, someone from the office will go and visit them at home, do their shopping or keep an eye on their welfare. Everyone is guaranteed a warm welcome - it is a rock upon which the local Arabic community can depend.
My life has been enriched beyond measure since I first went through their door - I have taken part in many events and activities, developed a great deal of cultural awareness and have been made to feel valued and respected as part of the LAC family. I have organised day-trips out to assist community members cement new friendships and have attended various classes run by the LAC either for leisure or work-related purposes. I have been able to help clients with their DSS, hospital, immigration and utilities queries with the help and support of my colleagues. Learning new skills makes me more efficient and being told my efforts are appreciated improves my own confidence too.
This is not to say we don’t work hard - we certainly do! There are many projects run to improve the personal lives of our clients and the community in general - the Saturday Education Project, regular health check events for the local Polish, Somali, Pakistani and Arabic communities, outside events and of course the annual Arabic Festival, to name but a few. But working with friends doesn’t feel like work at all; everyone helps each other and I think that’s why the Liverpool Arabic Centre is so very special in my life and the lives of the communities they help.
